Visible light is comprised of the rainbow of colors that all have a wavelength. Smoke scatters the light waves, with the shortest wavelengths scattering the easiest, and allowing only the longest wavelengths of orange and red light to reach our eyes.
A narrow but fairly dense band of high-altitude Canadian wildfire smoke is resulting in hazy skies over central VA this evening. Skies will gradually clear as the smoke shift east overnight.
The Antares resupply rocket will launch tonight from Wallops Island. High-altitude smoke will reduce the visibility some, but it should still be visible across all of central and eastern VA.
Tonight will be another opportunity to see the SpaceX Starlink satellite train. Let your eyes adjust to the dark, as the satellites will be dimmer than last night. The will pass over central VA high in the sky.
