For four years, a biologist walked under five wind turbines in the Swiss Alps, counting dead birds. Most piled up under just one of them, Turbine 3. Each of the other four killed only a fraction as many. Now this finding is changing how wind farms get built.

The wind farm sits 2,000 meters up in the Swiss Alps, right by the Gotthard mountain pass. About 1.7 million migrating birds flew through that pass during the four-year study. Most were small songbirds traveling at night between Central Europe and Africa. Biologist Federico Tettamanti walked under each turbine and counted bodies. He found 190 dead birds total. But Turbine 3 killed more than turbines 1, 2, 4, and 5 combined. It happened to sit in exactly the wrong spot for migrating birds.

Most wind farm studies just take the total dead birds and divide by the number of turbines. You get one average for the whole park. That average misses the actual problem. If you shut down five turbines every time the weather turns bad, you waste a huge amount of electricity even when only one is dangerous. The Gotthard team did something different. They put bird-detecting radar and visibility sensors at every turbine, and the blades only stop when conditions threaten that specific one. In the first two years, they used park-wide rules: bad weather, stop everything. Years three and four switched to per-turbine rules. The bird deaths stayed about the same. Each turbine only stopped when its own conditions made it dangerous, letting the others keep producing electricity.

Each year in Switzerland, humans cause around 36 million bird deaths. Cats kill 30 million of those. Another 5 million die crashing into glass windows, and cars and trucks hit another million. During the study, the Gotthard wind park accounted for 0.01% of the bird crossings at the pass. Switzerland's official limit for wind turbines is 10 dead birds per turbine per year. Gotthard came in at 9.5.

What Gotthard shows applies to wind farms everywhere. The exact spot where you put a turbine matters far more than which type of turbine you choose. In a Wyoming wind park, scientists tracked eagles flying near each turbine. At one specific turbine, eagles flew into the dangerous spinning-blade zone 2.39 times more often than at the safest. All the turbines were identical. Things like the shape of the land, which way the slope faces, how the wind moves, and visibility decide which turbines become bird killers. Across electricity sources, wind power kills about 0.4 birds for every gigawatt-hour generated. Coal and gas plants kill 5.2 birds for the same amount, mostly through habitat destruction, mercury poisoning, and acid rain. Roughly 15 times more dead birds per unit of energy.

Switzerland now plans to add two more turbines to the same park. The plan for where to put them is built on what Turbine 3 taught them.
