Lieutenant Lily-Mae Fisher, 31, from Virginia Water, Surrey. Britain’s only serving female Royal Navy Commando.

Killed in training on 3 June 2026 when a Merlin Mk4 from 846 Naval Air Squadron crashed at Sourton Down, Devon.

The career arc was extraordinary. An MSc in Geology from Imperial College London in 2016. Junior international representative for England in lacrosse and pole vault. Two years as a geologist with British Petroleum before commissioning in 2019 into the Royal Navy.

During a break in flying training she completed the 16 week All Arms Commando Course, earning the green beret as one of only seven women in British military history to do so, and becoming the UK’s only serving female Royal Navy Commando.

She was killed on her final assessment of flying training. Her Pilot’s Wings were to be awarded in June 2026. She died alongside Lieutenant Commander Chris Gayson, 42, and Petty Officer Owen Green, 24.

"Your newspaper is to be commended for the series of features on population this week. I disagree that we need more fertility incentives to boost the youth of our population. A gradually ageing population is not a cause for panic.
Concerns raised about the dependency ratio are a furphy. In Australia today, there are more people of working age who are not working than there are people over 65.
A recent study by Sustainable Population Australia shows that a reduction in the proportion of people of working age is likely to reduce unemployment & underemployment because the labour market will adjust to the forces of supply & demand & more people will be attracted into the workforce. This is surely beneficial.

The considerable cost of extra infrastructure to support population growth outweighs the small extent to which that same population growth could lessen pension, health-care & aged care burdens.
And that is not even including the often-ignored cost of continuing environmental deterioration caused by population growth."

The fact that the IPA is now backing One Nation, and de-legitimising the Liberals, is significant.

The IPA was founded to assist with the establishment of the Liberal Party.

- It had a seat at the table when the party was forming.

- It wrote the Menzies’ early policy platforms.

- Director CD Kemp (who founded the IPA alongside the Murdochs, Coles, and BHP) left papers from this era that became the official history of the Liberal Party.

- The IPA became an intergenerational power base. Kemp’s two sons were Liberal ex-Ministers.

- The IPA-to-MP pipeline delivered Tim Wilson, John Pesutto, James Paterson and many more.

Now, allies are abandoning ship – not leaping into a void, but abandoning the IPA’s historic free-market ideals and Liberal Party links to chase shifting institutional power.

We can debate whether it’s driven by a desire to maintain relevance, or capture by Rinehart (who bankrolls both One Nation and the IPA) – but the cause is irrelevant and the outcome is the same.

Once the IPA has legitimised One Nation as “mainstream” and de-legitimised the Liberals as implicitly fringe, there’s no going back.

(In the UK, the same story: The Institute of Economic Affairs, a stalwart Tory ally, helped undermine the Tories and drive Reform.)

The IPA has picked a side, and sorry Liberals: it ain’t you.

They’ve run off with some redhead girl from Ipswich, and are going to spend the next few years stringing you along.
