My mom was never the “cool mom.”
She didn’t let me sleep over at friends’ houses much. Didn’t let me go to every party. If something ended late, she was already outside waiting before it was even over.
I used to get so embarrassed.
Other parents trusted their kids more. Other moms weren’t “so strict.” I’d slam doors. Tell her she was suffocating me. Tell her she didn’t understand.
She never yelled back.
Just said, “You’ll thank me one day.”
I hated that sentence.
When I was 19, I found out she’d been taking self-defense classes.
Not for her.
For me.
On her days off, after 10-hour shifts, she’d go to a small gym across town. Paid cash. Never mentioned it.
In her drawer, after she passed, I found a folder. Inside were printouts, crime statistics in our area, bus routes I used, emergency contacts taped neatly in the corner.
And a small can of pepper spray still in its packaging.
There was a note clipped to it.
“In case I’m not there one day.”
All those nights she waited outside. All those calls asking, “Where are you?” All those rules I thought were control.
She wasn’t trying to cage me.
She was trying to outthink a world that scares mothers in ways daughters don’t fully see yet.
She didn’t say “I love you” every day.
She said it by staying awake until she heard the door unlock. By learning how to protect me even when I rolled my eyes at her. By preparing for dangers she prayed I’d never face.
And now I understand.
She wasn’t strict.
She was afraid of losing me in a world that doesn’t always protect girls the way mothers wish it would.

According to reports, Eva (the mother) lived with her daughter Laura at Rebelo's (the kidnapper's) house. Laura has worked for Carlos since 2014.
Eva claims that Carlos has previously attempted to keep her away from Laura. In July, she went to court, and the court ordered Carlos to return Eva. However, he left with Eva before the deadline.
It is alleged that the suspect drives an old gold Mercedes with the license plate HBN 940 GP. His phone is off, and the house is currently inaccessible.
The incident occurred in July 2024.
