نحن مرتبطون فكراً وحياة بكل متناقضات التعبير الإنساني، نقرأ الكتاب المقدس بلغة موسى العبراني وأفلاطون اليوناني، ونصلي بلهجة قريش العربي ونرفع القربان بلسان المسيح الآرامي. ثم إننا كهذا الشرق المتعدّد الوجوه نفسه، هذا الشرق الغارق في التاريخ حتى أصول الزمن، فلا يعرف أحد أين يبتدي هذا الشرق ولا كيف ينتهي، طوائف على صورته ومثاله، هي تعابير عن تراثات حضارته المختلفة، تراثات حضارية مختلة، راسبة فينا من سوريا القديمة، من بيزنطية، من الرومان، من الإغريق، من الفرس، من أبناء الجزيرة العربية، من بلاد ما بين النهرين. هي أسلاك من الأمس متشابكة في الحاضر، كيّفت فينا ذهنيات متباينة، أحكم عقدها التاريخ. فلكل طائفة تاريخ فريد يتحكم فيها ويفرض عليها مواقفه لدى كل قضية من الوجود، والقضية التي نعالجها هي موقف المسيحي الآن من المشرق العرب��. إنه لديه كعادته الأصيلة، ممزّق النفس، موزع الاتجاه بين حضور وغياب، بين ترسّل وتردّد، بين طليعة وقطيعة حسبما تحكم له أو عليه الذهنية الموروثة من ماضيه. فهو مصلوب يتأرجح بين حدين أبعدين، فالمسيحي هنا في الشرق هو إما ابن التراث البيزنطي في المدى الإمبراطوري العثماني أو العربي، أو هو نقيض ذلك ابن الجبل القورشي، وليد القرى، وليد الجبال وريث تقاليد رفضت باسم الحرية أن تنطوي تحت لواء امبراطورية أو سلطنة أو خلافة. رفض بيزنطية ابن الجبل القورشي واعتزل القومية السورية، انقطع عن العباسيين، احتمى عن المماليك، تفرد عن رعايا الحكم العثماني.
كان همه الأول والأخير الاعتصام في مأوى والإعتماد على نفسه، هذا إذا لن يكون مبتغاه استعادة امبراطورية لم يندمج تماماً بها، بل الحفاظ على فرديته في شخصية مستقلة ومنطقة حرة. فالدعاة الذين أطلعهم كانوا من الأمس الى اليوم يقولون بوطن واستقلال وتمييز وحرية، وإلا بلا الحياة.
