A @LeverhulmeTrust project exploring the paradoxes of ocean governance through the circulation of marine species and their biomaterials. (Project ended Aug '23)
Our first collective writing venture has been published in Atennae: journal of nature in visual culture.
The issue can be accessed/downloaded here https://t.co/0nqtHA988O Our essay 'Circulatory Entanglements' starts page 99 and is based on a talk we gave at the 4S in 2021
*New* on the blog! We are delighted to share a new essay from @HannahDCKNSN@E1izbethJohnson and Kristoffer Whitney:
"Bound by Blood" explores the biomedical uses of horseshoe crabs, shrimp, and jellyfish through their blood

Check out this blog written with @CEntanglements colleagues. In it we explore how the blood of marine species are used in biomedicine, or how marine biomaterials are used to stem human blood flows 🩸💉🔬🦐🪼

Not only was FS Russell born #OTD in 1897 it's also by happy coincidence #worldjellyfishday. Russell, a former director @thembauk was perhaps best known for his work on medusae. Here we have an illustration of the compass jelly from vol.2 of 'The Medusae of the British Isles' 🪼
Also check out this paper by @HannahDCKNSN and @E1izbethJohnson: 'Digesting Planetary Harms'. In it we detail how jellyfish bodies and biomaterials are being enrolled in biotechnological innovations that seek to consume harmful Anthropocene byproducts.

3rd November is #WorldJellyfishDay. Here's a short 🧵to celebrate these fascinating creatures which are one of our case studies in the @CEntanglements project. (1/9)
New @ConversationUK piece from project member Kristoffer Whitney & Jolie Crunelle: "Horseshoe crab blood is vital for testing intravenous drugs, but new synthetic alternatives could mean pharma won’t bleed this unique species dry"

'To see a horseshoe crab so vibrantly alive in its natural habitat, in such a hauntingly beautiful way, was astonishing.
We are looking at an ancient species, highly endangered, and also critical to human health. This photo is luminescent.' - Kathy Moran, #WPY59 Jury chair
For more on regulatory issues surrounding the use & management of American horseshoe crabs, check out this recent paper by Jolie Crunelle and project member Kristoffer Whitney: 'Regulating Horseshoe Crabs: Sustainability and Public Health'

Congratulations Laurent Ballesta, Wildlife Photographer of the Year for the second time 🏆
The tri-spine horseshoe crab has survived more than 100 million years but now faces habitat destruction and overfishing for food and for its blue blood, used to develop vaccines. #WPY59
#Crossdisciplinary ocean researchers unite! We're so excited to get back to school with OCEAN / UNI 'Culturing the Deep Sea: Towards a common heritage for allkind' from October 11 to December 13, 2023
There's still time to enrol (for FREE!) 🧊💦

🌊New Geo theme!🌊
'The Place and Politics of Marine Governance'
Geo is inviting papers on topics including the politics & regulatory structures of marine governance & coastal communities' experiences of the 'blue' economic acceleration. More info ⬇️

Through a series of interlaced reflections, we weave personal histories together with the political economies and imagined resource futures in which our research is embedded. Circuitously, we collectively arc toward a more “blended inquiry” and new ways of knowing. 🌊🐙🦐🦑🐟

We wanted to experiment with new writing formats and inspired by by Helen’s contributions to the project, we began to interrogate our own entanglements with the subjects of our research.
