Doing a study or creating some art and color picking from the colors of another artist you admire can help you greatly but ONLY if you know why the colors they use work and can apply that knowledge to your future work after seeing it in action.
The answer for many artists isn't explicitly studying color theory but saving art you like and color picking from it and thinking about why a color or group of colors work and use it similarly in your work.
Having basic color theory knowledge like warm and cool colors, contrast, and value can aid greatly when doing this. I disagree with just messing around until you find something that works as this is much more straightforward and based off something you already like.
