After five years of prep - screening, selecting, and crossing with winter barleys from around the globe - we are excited to announce our first year of Winter Intrastate Trials! Thanks to all the collaborators who make this possible!
This corn will be grazed in the fall. It will be grazed simultaneously with a cover crop mix and some grass pasture. A great big thank you to our neighbors, The Grove Family, for letting us borrow their corn planter to seed the corn.
Our Farm Operations Manager, Sam Ireland, planted two varieties of corn, a 74 day pioneer variety and a 69 day pioneer variety, at the research center. Corn was seeded at a rate of 14,000 seeds per acre. Despite the drought, the corn produced an ear and a decent biomass.
Despite the hot and dry conditions, we’ve got beautiful colors showing up at CARC! Mustard, canola, and flax are all blooming and putting on quite a show. Also, notice the bird flying above the flax. It’s one of the many nesting curlews taking up residence here.
We had visitors over the weekend! Brent Roeder, MSU Extension Sheep Specialist, brought his flock of sheep to graze plots in an organic weed control study. Four ewes and a water tank were fenced in a plot. Once the plot was grazed off, the sheep were moved to a new one.
It's Field Day time! We're so excited to have our in-person field days back this year.
Our first field day of the summer will be this Tuesday, 6/29, at 3pm in Havre at the Northern Ag Research Center. You can find the full schedule at https://t.co/14OL7bbHJx
Now that spring planting is complete, it’s time to start taking samples in the newly established manure legacy project. Soil samples were taken in the organic wheat plots to 10cm deep to send to Utah State University for soil health/biology testing.
We would like to thank Tim and Sherry Bishop for the time they have dedicated to agricultural research, and we want to wish them the best in their future endeavors.
Tim and Sherry worked at the research center from 2010-2021. Have a happy retirement!
Winter grains are heading out! We record the heading date for each line included in the winter cereal forage trial, which includes one triticale line and seven wheat lines this year.
It is Noxious Weed Awareness Week in Montana!
Established in the 2021 legislative session, the first full week in June highlights the statewide efforts to protect the integrity and productivity of Montana’s precious lands and resources from noxious weeds.

Our 2021 Field Day is scheduled for Tuesday, July 13th at 8:50am. We’ll be discussing “Crop and Variety Selection: What Should I Be Growing in Central Montana?”
Come join us @CentralAgCenter for explanations of research projects and results. 🌱 🚜 ☀️
As Montanans begin planting their gardens, we are reminding folks to buy seed from trustworthy sources to protect our state from invasive species and diseases. Reach out to our Seed Program to make sure your seeds are good-to-go.
