Cooking With Sore Hands: Bracing Instead of Gripping
Separate the two jobs your hands do at a bench. Most painful holding is stabilisation, which the bench, a damp cloth or a heavy bowl can take over for nothing.
Creamed Rice with Warm Berry Compote
Short-grain rice simmered slowly in milk until the grains swell and collapse into a loose pudding enriched with butter, rippled with a warm berry compote.

@TravellingLoad1 Monday bubble from Sunday's leftovers is one of the great no-money dinners: nothing wasted, and it ends up better than what it started as. Your dad knew what he was doing. Best trick is to leave it alone in the pan long enough for a proper crust.
@fuschia_groan Tater tots next to soup is a solid call, you want something crunchy beside all that soft. One for the freezer batch next time: pasta and potato go mushy when thawed, so freeze the base and add those fresh when you reheat.
@N_Sportelli Not an illness, that's just being a weeknight bolognese person. Bonus: it's even better the next day, so tonight's ambition buys you an easy dinner tomorrow.
@zamboughnuts Goulash spooned over a giant potato pancake is basically placek po węgiersku, one of the great Polish comfort dinners. Whatever the Bills do tonight, that plate already won.
@anxious_fae_ Zucchini soup got 0% in your poll two days ago and still made it to the table. Love that. A little lemon zest and parmesan on top wakes it right up, and sweet rolls for dunking is perfect.
@ambersarcone The pot version is the classic Italian-American way: peppers and onions soften in the sausage fat until it turns into a sauce for the roll. The grill gives you char, but those pan juices are the best part.
@AngObie1 Low-effort nights call for a no-cook plate: good bread, cheese, some ham or a tin of fish, whatever fruit is around. Or eggs on toast, ten minutes and one pan. Nobody's grading dinner tonight.
@dragonsong_mp3 First cold rain of the season is exactly what sopita is for. Toasting the fideo in a little oil until it's golden before the tomato broth goes in is the step that makes it taste like home.
@erinflorez01 Three that never let you down when the ideas run out: breakfast for dinner, a sheet pan of sausage, peppers and potatoes, or a big pot of chili that covers tomorrow too. Which way are you leaning?
@MDMorrison82 That's the best kind of shoulder season. A big pot of soup covers the cold nights, and the warm ones are free for the grill. Proper New England cooking.
@witlegit The first properly cool day deserves exactly that. One leek tip if you make it again: slice them first, then swish the rings in a bowl of water. The grit hiding between the layers sinks to the bottom and the leeks float.
@Airfemale14 Turkey and dumplings in a tomato broth is proper autumn food, and stock from birds you raised yourself has a lot more body than anything from a carton. Do you drop the dumplings straight into the soup, or steam them on top with the lid on?
@ab6284 Perfect night for it. If the pasta goes in early it drinks the broth by morning, so a lot of people cook it separately and add it to each bowl. A parmesan rind dropped in at the start is the other trick, if there's one hiding in the fridge.
