Alonso is using the asymmetric 4-2-4/4-2-5 from goal kicks when playing a back 5 at Chelsea, essentially the same as a back 4, except for the profiles, which I will get to later. He is using the 3-2-5 in settled possession, again the same structure most coaches use when playing a back 4. From restarts, he set up in a man-to-man press, again the same as when playing a back 4.

There are only 2 elements which are different compared to playing a back 4. The first is the profiles. Generally, if you use a back 5 in a typical 3-4-2-1, you can field 3 attackers compared to 4 in a standard 4-2-3-1. Honestly, it is a non-issue if you use profiles like Neto at wing-back: you effectively field 4 attackers, but one has extra defensive responsibility. Usually, back 4 coaches also put heavier defensive responsibility on 1 winger to create a situational back 5 in mid to low blocks. Arteta has also done this frequently.

The biggest difference comes when talking about the settled defensive structure. You defend in a 5-4-1/5-2-3 compared to a 4-4-2. A 5 will actually offer much better defensive coverage on the defensive line and deny the numerical superiority for the 3-2-5, which is by far the most common structure in modern football. The criticism is around transitioning from a zonal block in a back 5 into a press through jumps and triggers. Since you have 1 less player in the forward line compared to a 4-4-2, this usually makes the distances too large for the defenders in a back 5 to jump and transition into a press. This is generally true; there is no denying that. It is simply a trade-off you take for the advantages you get with a back 5.

Although, there is more nuance than that. It is much easier to transition from a zonal block into a high press against an opposition playing a 3-2-5 (Amorim's favoured structure) for a 5-2-3 zonal block compared to a 4-4-2. For a 4-4-2 to jump into a press against a 3-2-5, you need 1 of the wingers to come inside to jump to the wide centre-back, or one of the strikers has to drop onto the double pivot, with both wingers coming inside. In a 5-2-3, every player has a simple vertical jump to lock onto a 3-2-5. It is one of the easiest zonal to man-to-man transitions. It makes complete sense why he would pick this game to get the squad used to a back 5.

Alonso has said that he wants to be flexible, so we will probably see both throughout the season based on the opposition and the availability of players. I would much rather build on 1, but I can understand why Alonso wants this flexibility. He also used a back 4 in some games at Leverkusen, so it is clearly something he believes in.
