REMEMBERING CUMMO - 20 YEARS ON
This special video celebrating the life and legacy of John ‘Cummo’ Cummins was shown at Victorian Trades Hall at a memorial evening marking the 20th anniversary of his passing.
Cummo - legendary trade unionist, fighter and mate - passed away on August 29 2006 aged just 58, after a 13-month battle with brain cancer.
For many who stood alongside him through the great battles of the building industry, Cummo wasn't simply a great union leader. They believe he was one of the greatest Australia has ever produced.
A much-loved official of the BLF and CFMEU, Cummo was a master strategist, formidable negotiator and fearless campaigner.
But perhaps his greatest strength was that he never lost sight of who he was fighting for.
Working people. The members.
Cummo helped generations of building workers win better wages, safer conditions and greater dignity at work. He helped civilise a dangerous industry where workers had too often paid for a living with their health - and sometimes their lives.
His fight for others continues through the John Cummins Memorial Fund, which has raised millions of dollars to assist people diagnosed with brain tumours and support disadvantaged young people.
Twenty years on, Cummo's legacy isn't simply something we remember.
It's something the union movement carries forward.
And perhaps, looking back at a lifetime spent fighting for working people, Cummo might quietly say:
“You've done yourself a treat, Cummo.”
Dare to struggle. Dare to win.

COULD THIS BE PERTH’S NEXT BUILDING DISASTER?
Remember Niche Living - the failed builder that required a State Government rescue package?
Now we have serious questions about whether people connected to that operation have resurfaced behind another company at this development.
Is the Phoenix rising again?
But what we’ve seen on site raises even bigger questions.
The development sat dormant and exposed to the elements for years. Our inspections have identified water damage, rusting steel, black mould, deteriorating concrete and potential structural concerns that we believe demand proper independent investigation.
And take a look at the concrete slab and supporting column in this video.
Would you put your life savings into an apartment here without knowing it had been independently declared structurally sound?
We’re calling for a fully independent structural engineer to inspect the entire development and for the findings to be made public.
Before another apartment is built.
Before another apartment is sold.
Before this project goes any further.
If everything is safe and structurally sound, an independent inspection should put those concerns to rest.
People buying homes deserve answers — not questions hanging over their heads.

AWARD-WINNING PROOF THAT UNION LABOUR BUILDS BETTER!
On time. On budget. Quality built. @edithcowanuniversity awarded ‘Best in Australia.’
When you put more than 800 skilled Union construction workers, backed by decent EBA wages and conditions, on to one of the most complex building projects in Western Australia, this is what you get:
Australia's best construction project. It’s official!
Perth's spectacular @EdithCowanUni City Campus has been named the best construction project in Australia, winning the 2026 Australian Construction Achievement Award - the construction industry's highest National honour.
It beat some of the biggest infrastructure projects in the country, including Melbourne's Metro Tunnel and Western Sydney International Airport.
Behind that achievement was a highly skilled Union workforce, working under an EBA and delivering an extraordinarily complex project to the highest standard.
At its peak, more than 800 construction workers were working on the ECU project.
Formworkers. Concreters. Steel fixers. Riggers. Crane crews. Scaffolders. Electricians. Plumbers. Ceiling fixers. Brick layers. Glaziers. Painters. Finishers... and dozens of other classifications. Proud Union members!
The project also supported 122 apprentices and trainees, giving young workers the opportunity to learn alongside experienced tradespeople on what would ultimately be recognised as Australia's best construction project.
That's part of building a strong industry - passing skills and standards from one generation to the next.
Workers who brought years of training, experience and craftsmanship through the gates every morning.
They didn't just build another building.
They built Australia's best.
Congratulations to all our members. This is what skilled Union EBA labour delivers.
On time. On budget. Quality built.

SETTING THE PACE - ON TIME, ON BUDGET!
The best construction projects aren't built by cutting corners. They're built by investing in people.
Every day across Western Australia @CFMEUWA members are proving that quality, safety and productivity go hand in hand. Union construction workers are among the industry's most highly trained, highly skilled and experienced professionals. They know that real productivity isn't about rushing the job - it's about getting it right the first time, and on time.
When workers are respected with fair wages, safe workplaces and decent conditions, the industry attracts and retains the very best tradespeople. Their experience means fewer mistakes, less rework, fewer delays and higher-quality outcomes. That saves time, reduces costs and delivers greater value for clients and the community.
The old saying has stood the test of time: 'Build it cheap. Pay for it twice...' Cutting corners may look cheaper on paper, but defects, delays and costly repairs inevitably follow.
The @CFMEUWA believes there is a better way. Build with skilled workers. Build safely. Build with pride. Build with proper standards in place.
The result is projects that are delivered on time, on budget and built to last - from the foundations to the finishing touches. That's not just good for workers. It's good for builders, clients, taxpayers and Western Australia.
That's why the @CFMEUWA isn't just building our state - we're Setting the Pace.

CIVMEC’s OFFER IS AN INSULT - VOTE NO!
DON’T SELL YOUR FUTURE FOR 1.75%
CIVMEC wants workers to accept the lowest wages and conditions in the North West while the company continues to secure billion-dollar projects and record profits.
Voting opens July 2
After four bargaining meetings, CIVMEC rejected every worker claim without any meaningful negotiation, laughed in workers' faces and came back with an offer of just 1.75% per year over four years.
Meanwhile plant operators, carpenters, scaffolders and riggers working under CFMEU agreements in Perth are already on higher rates with 5% annual increases, while sleeping in their own beds every night.
FIFO workers should be compensated for the hardship and sacrifice of working away from home - not exploited for it.
There is no shortage of work.
There is no shortage of projects.
There is a shortage of respect from CIVMEC.
This agreement will lock your wages and conditions for years to come... when approved, you’ll be living with the consequences while the company continues to grow its profits.
Demand better. Stand together. VOTE NO to the CIVMEC C.C.E. Pty Ltd 2026 Agreement, demand the bosses acknowledge your worth and get them back to the table!
If you don’t fight, you lose.

At our June delegates' meeting we heard from @yacwa Youth Affairs Council of Western Australia CEO Kylie Wallace and representative Kaya, who spoke about the devastating and heartbreaking reality of youth homelessness in Western Australia. Their stories were heartbreaking, but also a wake-up call for every politician in this state.
Every night, around 70 young people desperately seek a safe place to sleep. Too often, there are only two beds available... Meanwhile, hundreds are left to sleep under bridges, in parks, abandoned buildings or wherever they can find shelter, exposed to violence, abuse and exploitation. For some, the despair becomes so overwhelming that they see no future at all.
This is not a failure of charities or communities. It is a failure of political leadership.
Governments are quick to announce new initiatives and funding packages, yet far too many vulnerable young people remain forgotten. The true measure of our society is not what we promise, but what we deliver to those with the least.
The @CFMEUWA believes every young person deserves safety, dignity and hope. We will continue to support practical solutions, but governments must do far more. No child in Western Australia should have to fight simply to survive another night. Our politicians need to change this.

An early start at Trades Hall for your delegates with a full industry update from the Secretary and your officials.
The @CFMEUWA continues to set the pace: EBAs keep coming, our membership keeps growing, and workers continue to stand together because they know a strong union delivers real results.
We also heard from @yacwa Youth Affairs Council of Western Australia CEO Kylie Wallace and representative Kaya, who spoke about the devastating and heartbreaking reality of youth homelessness in Western Australia. Her message was powerful and a reminder that too many young people are doing it tough out there.
Kylie acknowledged and thanked the CFMEU for its ongoing support, and Secretary Mick Buchan for his commitment to the Vinnies @CEOSleepout and fighting for the vulnerable young people in our community.
Our Union is more than wages and conditions. It is about standing up for working people, their families, and those who need a voice.
@CFMEUWA is Setting the Pace - standing strong, growing our membership, winning more EBAs, and making a difference both on and off the job.
