🚨 Understand there is cautious optimism from Chelsea they can sign a centre-back before summer.

Chelsea are looking for a new starting level centre-back and this has been the case since summer, even before Levi Colwill’s ACL injury.

Dean Huijsen was the primary target at the time and Chelsea were confident until Real Madrid entered the race. It was always obvious if Real bid, Huijsen would choose that move.

Chelsea will wait for a new defender unless they find a starter, but there is a chance of late market movement. Jérémy Jacquet among the names appreciated but several targets explored.

Chelsea didn’t intentionally deny Enzo Maresca a centre-back, they decided no targets were worth bidding on after Huijsen.

Some insiders believe Chelsea’s position in the market was weakened by public calls for a new defender during a summer where other Premier League clubs also struggled to add in the same position.
