The Viral Lie About Dalton Eatherly (Chud the Builder), How One Purposefully Misinterpreted Phrase Became International “News” - Anatomy of a smear campaign

On June 17, 2026, during a bond revocation hearing in Davidson County, an investigator testified that “shots were fired before they hit the ground.”

The actual sequence (per evidence and lawyer clarification): Joshua Fox attacked Dalton first (punch + headlock) → Dalton fired shots in self-defense → they hit the ground.

Yet within hours, a completely false narrative exploded: “Chud shot before being attacked / before ever being attacked / before any physical attack occurred.”

The framing first went viral on X at 19:51 GMT on June 17 via @rawsalerts: “...footage showed Chud shooting before the alleged attack.”

That post received massive engagement, got Community Noted, and was later deleted.

This is a textbook case of how a single distorted phrase from court testimony can travel from one X account → viral social media → international mainstream coverage in under 48 hours.
