Weezy’s transfer came as a surprise to me, simply because, given the high regard in which he is generally held as a talent at the club, I didn’t expect Bayern to let him leave permanently at just 17. Anyone who has followed my posts about him over the past year knows that I still considered him relatively far away from our first team and wasn’t particularly satisfied with his development over the last year. Nevertheless, I thought the club would monitor his development for longer and retain control over his future before being prepared to let him go.

From the player’s perspective, the transfer makes perfect sense. Club Brugge is an excellent place for young talents, and the Belgian league is a much more suitable platform for his current level than the Bundesliga. On top of that, he can gain international experience. At Bayern, he would have had very little prospect of playing time, while the Regionalliga would have offered too little for him. That being said, Brugge themselves have an extremely strong talent pipeline, and he will still have to establish himself there, not only against players like Jan Virgili, Forbes and Diakhon, but also against strong talents coming through NXT, the U19s and U17s.

Weezy possesses exceptional qualities. His explosiveness in particular is something that, when used properly, can make a difference at any level. However, there are also many aspects of his game that are still very raw and lead to a high error rate, and those are areas he will have to improve significantly.

€5 million is a fair market price, especially with add-ons and a high sell-on percentage. On paper, it is not a bad deal for Bayern financially. I don’t believe Kompany dropped Weezy because of one misconduct, as many people here seem to suspect. If anything, I believe the opposite: Kompany thinks very highly of him and his character, with all of its strengths and weaknesses, and was therefore interested in finding a good solution for the boy. The best path for his development and career simply isn’t at Bayern right now. I think everyone involved came to that conclusion together and Bayern didn’t want to deny him a very good development opportunity purely out of self-interest.

With a player who possesses something genuinely exceptional and whose development is still difficult to predict, I typically like to see a buy-back clause. But ultimately, you can’t always get everything you want.

In conclusion, I think all parties can be satisfied with this deal, and for the player it is a suitable platform for his development. For Weezy, the important thing now is to take the next steps, both mentally and in his football. Anyone who knows the boy knows that he is a very warm-hearted and likeable kid.

I wish him nothing but the best and hope he can fulfil his potential over the next few years and am excited to see how he will do in Belgium. We don’t have many players in Germany with his profile and his exceptional qualities, and I hope he can push his development to the point where we’ll get to enjoy watching him play for the German national teams for many years to come.
