Un nuevo estudio sobre la inteligencia humana realizado por investigadores de la Universidad Northwestern y la Universidad de Oregon, mostró que en los últimos 12 años,
las puntuaciones del Cociente Intelectual (IQ en inglés) en los estadounidenses descendieron hasta 2 puntos en todos los grupos de edad, niveles de educación y géneros. Las disminuciones más pronunciadas fueron entre los jóvenes.

El estudio determinó que el coeficiente intelectual de los estadounidenses aumentó drásticamente durante el siglo 20 (1901-2000), pero ahora está en disminuciones constante.

Los investigadores cognitivos plantean la hipótesis de que los teléfonos inteligentes, los asistentes de voz como "Alexa", el autocompletado en la búsqueda web, la inteligencia artificial, el Wi-Fi y el uso desmedido de las redes sociales, han sustituido las funciones superiores del cerebro, llegando a embrutecer cada vez más al ser humano.
