Two aerial firefighting pilots were killed last week when their helicopter crashed while battling a wildfire in central Utah.

On Friday, August 7, Christopher Andersen, 64, and Miles Elliott, 50, died when their Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane went down in rugged terrain near Three Creeks Reservoir, while supporting crews fighting the Widemouth 2 Fire in the Fishlake National Forest. Andersen was the chief pilot. Both worked for Helicopter Transport Services under contract with the U.S. Forest Service.

The helicopter crashed under unknown circumstances shortly after 10:30 a.m. The crash sparked a separate fire, which, along with steep terrain, kept crews from reaching the wreckage until the next day. The NTSB and FAA are investigating.

On August 21, 2026 a U.S. Marine was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound inside a vehicle in Nago City, Okinawa, according to Japanese reporting. The vehicle was outside a medical facility in the Gusuku 2-chome area of central Nago, and police recovered a firearm nearby/in connection with the scene.

The case is being investigated as a possible suicide, although Japanese authorities had not publicly issued a final determination as of the initial reports.

The Marine's name, age, rank, unit and home station have not yet been publicly released. That means it is not yet possible to reliably determine whether he belonged to a Camp Schwab, Camp Hansen, Camp Foster or another Okinawa-based unit.

U.S. Army Private 1st class Barney F. Hajiro received the Medal of Honor for his actions from October 19-29. Fighting in Eastern France, Pvt. Hajiro repeatedly exposed himself to danger during the operation to relieve "The Lost Battalion."

Tragically, Vethos died in the line of duty on July 6, 2026. He was found unresponsive inside his K-9-equipped patrol vehicle. Preliminary findings indicate that his death was caused by heat exposure.

Because his passing happened on duty, the Junction City Police Department immediately requested an independent, third-party investigation from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Honoring the Heroes of Yanky 72

Today marks 9 years since July 10, 2017-the day we lost 16 of our nation's finest heroes.

When a Marine Corps KC-130T (Call Sign: Yanky 72) tragically went down in Mississippi, 15 Marines and 1 Navy Sailor made the ultimate sacrifice.

They were dedicated crew members from VMGR-452 and elite warriors from the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion, flying toward a training mission.

They were husbands, fathers, sons, brothers, and fiercely loyal teammates.

They represented the absolute best of our country.

Vincent J. Speranza, a legend for many, is no more. He d¡ed at 98 years old.

Vincent was sent overseas with Company H., 3rd Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. His unit arrived in France and would later fight in the Battle of the Bulge, were Vincent J. Speranza had his first engagement. He operated a machine gun from a foxhole in a forward position outside of the town. In total, Vincent spent 144 days in combat.
May he rest in peace.

While off-duty K-9 Santi was being kept inside the residence due to fireworks. K-9 Santi was let out for a potty break, when an aerial mortar went off nearby. K-9 Santi fled, jumping the fence, his handler pursued after him. Due to the continuation of fireworks going off, K-9 Santi did not stop.

His handler eventually located him badly injured in the roadway, where he had been struck by a vehicle. His handler rushed him to an emergency veterinarian hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Former DEVGRU Blue Squadron operator Trey Lindsey is a retired U.S. Navy SEAL who served more than 20 years in the Navy, including 18 years as a SEAL and 13 years assigned to the Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU), commonly known as SEAL Team Six. During his career, he participated in numerous combat deployments and held senior enlisted leadership positions, earning a reputation as an experienced operator and mentor. He is also publicly associated with the successful 2011 hostage rescue of Jessica Buchanan in Somalia, one of DEVGRU's most well-known operations.

We remember U.S. Navy Lt. Michael E. Thornton, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary bravery in Vietnam on October 31, 1972. During an intelligence mission, Thornton's team came under heavy enemy fire, and when he learned that his senior officer had been wounded, he ran back through the barrage to reach him. Thornton carried the injured officer to safety and then swam with him for two hours until they were rescued. His selfless courage saved the lives of every member of his team. Lt. Thornton is truly a great American hero.

After 21 years of dedicated service with the Vermont State Police, Lieutenant Paul Ravelin is retiring.

Lt. Ravelin was hired in 2005, beginning his career at the Williston Barracks. In 2009 he joined the Bomb Squad, a special team he would remain on for his entire career and eventually command. After working his way through the ranks, Paul is retiring as a Lieutenant and Special Operations Commander. In 2018 Lt. Ravelin received a life saving award for providing lifesaving measures to a fellow officer experiencing a cardiac event.

We thank Paul for his 21 years of leadership, dedication and service to our great state and its people. Congratulations on an outstanding career, enjoy your retirement.
