OUR POSITION ON THE OUTGOING VICE-CHANCELLOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN REMAINS UNCHANGED

No amount of carefully worded congratulatory messages or attempts to rewrite history will erase the realities experienced by many students under the administration of the outgoing Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Oyebode Adebowale.

This is an administration under which students who protested were expelled. Those students challenged their expulsion in court and secured judgment in their favour. Rather than accepting the decision and allowing them to return to complete their education, the University chose to continue the legal battle by appealing the judgment. To us, that reflected an approach that prioritized institutional pride over reconciliation with students.

Beyond that, students witnessed one of the most significant increases in school fees in the University’s history. Many families struggled under the weight of the new charges, while countless students resorted to crowdfunding and public appeals simply to remain in school. These are not the hallmarks of a student-friendly administration.

Throughout his tenure, NANS received repeated complaints alleging policies and actions perceived by students as anti-student. These concerns informed our interventions and our public position. Our responsibility is to amplify the voices of Nigerian students, not to echo official narratives.

Every Students’ Union President has the right to express his opinion based on his experience. However, no individual leader can invalidate the experiences of thousands of students who endured the consequences of policies they believed were unfair. The history of any administration cannot be determined solely by farewell tributes or official commendations.

NANS will continue to stand with every student whose rights are threatened, whose voice is suppressed, or whose future is placed at risk by policies that undermine access to education.

We do not speak out of malice, and we do not engage in revisionism. We speak because history must be recorded truthfully, and because future generations of student leaders deserve an honest account of the challenges students faced.

Offices are temporary, but legacies endure. Every public officer will ultimately be remembered not by the praises of a few, but by the impact of their decisions on the lives of the people they served.
