During perimenopause, I was told, "It can't be that bad," while feeling I was at a breaking point. Menopause can be a really difficult time for us Black women, and the support from where we expect it the most should not be "bear with it."

Hot flashes and night sweats can be more frequent and disruptive for Black women. SWAN data found that during the transition from early to late perimenopause, about 80% of Black women reported hot flashes compared with about 65% of other ethnic groups.

Fatigue, sleep changes, weight changes, and thinning hair can occur during perimenopause—but they can also overlap with thyroid concerns, a major issue for midlife Black women. Do not assume every new symptom is just menopause.
