NSE has launched electronic gold receipts (EGRs). What does this mean, and how do I buy/sell?

Srikanth Matrubai answers:
Simple—1 EGR = 1 gram of gold in a SEBI-approved vault, held in your demat.

Why it matters (3 points):

1. Start with 1 gram
2. Live exchange pricing (no making charges)
3. No storage/purity issues

You don’t buy jewellery or bars—you own gold digitally, backed by real physical gold stored safely in SEBI-approved vaults.

How to BUY (4 steps):

1. Open trading + demat account
2. Search “EGR” on NSE platform
3. Choose quantity (e.g., 10 = 10 grams)
4. Place buy order (like shares)

How to SELL (3 steps):

1. Go to holdings
2. Select EGR units
3. Place sell order at market/limit price

Example: ₹1 lakh → ~100 grams EGR vs jewellery (losing ~8–12% in charges)

Wedding example:
If you need 100 grams for a wedding after 2 years, start buying 5 grams/month via EGR (total 120 grams). Close to the date, sell EGR and buy jewellery once—avoiding repeated making charges and price shocks.

Use for 5–15% portfolio allocation, not for emotional buying.
