While our Treasury Room isn't open to the public (as it houses some of our archive collection) we wanted to share a quick peak at the ceiling.

These sculpted vaulting bosses feature figures holding shields and we think they date back to a 1512 refurbishment, funded by Henry VII.

The room also features a "squint" (a small wall opening) which once looked directly onto the altar area of the monastic Church below. This meant a monk who was in there could effectively still be part of the service.

The room has been used for many different things since then, but a lovely story is that the late #HilaryMantel would spend time sitting in there, soaking up the atmosphere to help her conjure the world of the #WolfHallTrilogy.

A big thank you to Alexandra Epps, @TheArtsSociety_ Lecturer and @colguides for a wonderful 1611 Lecture last night.

We explored the stunning stained glass windows of the City, switching off the lights to let the colours shine which felt a bit like looking at a beautiful magic lantern!

Adding to the variety of the #spring flowers in our gardens, the #camellias bring a particularly dramatic look. We love how their boldly coloured flowers stand out against their deep, glossy green leaves - It’s easy to see why they were fashion designer Coco Chanel’s favourite flower!

Camellias originally made the journey from Asia to the UK in the late 1700s, but we believe the oldest of our own resident plants have been calling the Charterhouse home since the 1950s.

Our Horticulture team was delighted to host some very special guests last week! We welcomed Trevor and Ric Glen, Head of Landscape at the iconic Royal Hospital Chelsea, for a tour of our historic buildings and gardens.

Between exploring our grounds and diving into our history, they even found a moment to drop by the Community Space for a well-earned cuppa and a chat.

We might think of the medieval London Charterhouse as a space strictly forbidden to women. But for its first 34 years, the reality was much more fluid.

New research by Victoria Sands (Oxford University) reveals a "lost" era between 1371 and 1405 when women were "wont to enter" the monastery church.

Inside the blog:
A Shared Space: Why the monks "did not dare" to forbid women from the site.
Community Power: How the community played a role in keeping the London Charterhouse "open-plan" for decades.
The 1405 Ultimatum: The moment visiting priors discovered women in the chapel and
threatened the procurator with a "no wine" diet until a wall was built.
