Unions are another matter entirely (and we probably have the same POV on them in the college athletics context), but the threat of even limited and ad hoc work stoppages can have devastating financial effects on a school, conference and media partners. There is such limited inventory of premium games (especially football) that the loss of even a handful can wreck the financials of ADs and Conferences for a season or more. Dismissing the potential of work stoppages out of hand is a miscalculation that no AD or Conference can afford.

Not sure what to tell you….1. almost all of the “ridiculous” demands have been enacted. 2. I’m neither pro-union nor anti-SAAC and Jeffrey Kessler and Steve Berman are the biggest/most effective pro-athlete voices. 3. Work stoppage (even a limited one) is the biggest risk being overlooked in all the efforts to roll back rights. @DanWolken is spot on with this. I spent the entirety of the summer/early Fall of 2020 working in between #WeAreUnited, UCLA, the PAC 12, and Governor Newsome’s office and it resulted in the Return to Training Task Force and protocol which resulted in half the season being played. Big Ten and PAC 12 were more or less in lock step on these issues at the time.

You said it “went nowhere”, however, empirical evidence says it “went somewhere” and may go even further if Congress gets involved. That’s the biggest risk to college athletics and because no one considers athletes in these discussions they are overlooking the biggest risk to the enterprise.

Revisionist history. 1. Big Ten and PAC-12 lost half of their seasons that year and almost didn’t play at all. 2. Check their “ridiculous” list of demands and check the House settlement, NCAA enhanced benefits added since, and where the athlete compensation trajectory is headed. A lot of it has come to fruition.
