A Noir gem. It seems the writer, Bruce Elliot was an expert Stage Magician. Hence the relentless Helter-Skelter misdirection that drives the story. Really Good.

@JackDeRipper44 It's irrelevant, irregular & immaterial. I enjoyed it but it wasn't for me. Seen a few movie adaptions - Same.
Lawyers I prefer, George V. Higgins- Kennedy. Michael Connelly- Haller. Steve Cavanagh- Flynn. Gianrico Carofiglio- Guerrieri, McBain, Margolin, Diehl, Matsumoto etc

A Tale of 2 Widows. First John Grisham I’ve read. Starts out quite amusing becomes sinister as it goes along. Didn’t like any of the characters except for the criminal defence attorney and Landy from the FBI. Too long. Lazy ending.
Simenon's Widow is light years ahead of this.

Giorgio Scerbanenco was the father of Italian Giallo.
These are the only 2 books I know of in English both excellent and as dark as you could ever hope for. A shame there aren’t more available but I suspect translations are too expensive for a niche audience and limited sales

Well written and quite enjoyable but I didn’t buy the wealthy detective sergeant on Houston’s Homicide squad or the killer’s motive or his method of murder. Extremely detailed but let down by the 2 main characters. Strong for 1983.

Just Wow! A script at heart, honed in LA, embellished with skill, nurtured by style. 3 against untouchable evil. Ultracinematic, doubt if there’ll be a better novel this year. Once again @jordan_harper's signature motif signifies Hell. Explosive writing. Surely another Edgar.

The newest and presumably the last Jane Whitefield book was a pleasant surprise. The 2 previous novels were poor but this one is particularly good. Really sad to learn of Thomas Perry's passing. His creations like Whitefield and the Butcher's Boy are unforgettable characters.

Elmer M Parsons wrote his first novel whilst sentenced to 5 years in San Quentin for passing stolen cheques. He sold it to Fawcett under the pen-name, Philip Race. Dark of Summer and Killer Take All are both excellent examples from the Gold Medal era in the early 60s.

Hot Tickets was surprisingly disappointing. Had a few enjoyable scenes but read as if the writer really struggled with this one. Abandoned halfway through. Such a shame.

First of 2 hard to find Private eye novels from J W Rider better known as Shane Stevens. Malone has a tongue sharper than Marlowe and Spencer combined. Shamus Award winner. Superb story, delicious dialogue. Loved it.

Must have missed this standalone by the beautiful, brilliant and sadly missed, Mo Hayder. A complex novel as much about relationships as it is about murders. Estranged sisters, one a cop the other a divorced mother down on her luck. Not her best but certainly better than most.

Stunning sequel to Another Day in Paradise. Brutally real and violent. From Juvie to big scores, Bobbie is hindered by his drug habit, women and his own friends. Eddie Little only wrote 2 books but managed to turn out 2 masterpieces no other crime writer could possibly emulate.

The other 2 books in Curtis’s excellent London Trilogy. Poor education in the !930's leaves few choices for finding work. Ken, the Gilt Kid is a Burglar, Tommy Mutch a Boxer. Both have their dreams. Both experience inevitable hardships and betrayals. Crime pays in different ways

1938 London. Released prisoner visits old girlfriend and finds she’s been murdered. Police have his description and he goes on the run. Story, dialogue, characters, perfect. Indispensable classic. Movie version strongly censored. Slang might be challenging. Not the Bogart Movie.

Unscrupulous grifter has a 2 part masterplan to change his identity and make himself rich beyond his dreams. Unlikeable character but the unexpected ending raises this just above average. Effortlessly adaptable as a movie.
