Two more opportunities to join my @EcoSAGElab as an @ARIES_DTP funded PhD student: (1) studying nature-based solutions for warming impacts on rivers https://t.co/tSz1Cp8Fq0 (2) modelling future Southern Ocean ecosystems https://t.co/Q2kb5gClMA Applications due by January.
I'm looking for a 3-year postdoc to reconstruct food webs from environmental DNA and traditional approaches with fieldwork in Icelandic streams, Italian coastal lagoons, and the Celtic Sea. Part of a @LeverhulmeTrust project with @stefanako71. Apply here: https://t.co/IuptNR90ch
It took me SEVEN years to figure out that you can save a ggplot as a vectorized .svg file ggsave("file.svg"). The svg file can be opened on powerpoint and it will be completely vectorized, even text are still recognized as text boxes! No more recreating plots on illustrator!!!!!
In high sediment contamination concentration near oil and gas platforms, we showed a general decline in total species richness while pollution-resilient species dominant. Loss of larger predators and dietary specialists showed a degraded but more connected food web structure.
North Sea fossil fuel can cause pollution to spike 10k%
Researchers from @EssexLifeSci , @NHM_London and @CefasGovUK also found species fell by 30% near platforms.
@DrNatalieHicks 🔉 "These platforms are leaving a potentially concerning legacy."

Our new study based on eddy covariance suggests strong CO2 uptake in the Southern Ocean. Much appreciated for all the co-authors, reviewers and colleagues who provided useful discussions. Science Advances https://t.co/e4D8TzDpLc
Super excited to have received @LeverhulmeTrust funding with @stefanako71 to explore how environmental DNA analysis can turbo-boost the reconstruction of aquatic food webs across habitat types and over multiple time scales. Watch this space for 2 x 3-year post doc opportunities.
What habitats contribute to the nursery function of estuarine systems for juvenile sea bass? More than you might think!
Have a read of our new paper in The Journal of Fish Biology as part of @TheFSBI symposium 2023 special issue with @Uni_of_Essex! https://t.co/AqOOqMHLD5
Ever wondered how temperature alters size-based feeding relationships in Southern Ocean mesopelagic fish? Have a read of our new paper in @NatureComms! https://t.co/CHxbSnGzDi
Finally finished a new review paper: "Machine learning for climate physics and simulations" @turbulentjet We highlight the distinct yet complementary goals of ML: accelerating simulations vs learning physics. Share with us your favorite ML4climate papers! https://t.co/XrM9dBT4rM
🌊 Discover the urgent need to rethink decommissioning strategies for aging oil and gas platforms. Read insights from INSITE researchers in this latest article. https://t.co/wWzKDtdwK7 #Environment#Research
Come catch me at my poster tomorrow at #OSM24! I’m presenting work on sedimentary blue carbon dynamics surrounding decommissioned oil and gas platforms. Would be great to chat about anything mud related 😁@EssexLifeSci@CefasGovUK
Offshore oil and gas exploitation could not only adds stress on benthic biodiversity but also simplifies food web structure. Come #OSM24 220-222 if you are interested. @EssexLifeSci
