The paper helps clarify when open development is likely to be sustainable, and helps think about when we should expect consolidation, partial openness, or hybrid models to emerge instead. 3/
Open-source LLMs raise big questions: who invests, who free-rides, and what makes openness sustainable? Interestingly, an older paper of mine with @GalinaZudenkova turns out to be quite useful for thinking through these issues. 1/

The core problem we study is familiar today: when knowledge can be freely shared, private incentives to invest may weakenβeven if openness generates large social benefits. 2/

I was at Rome 2012, Evora 2013, Milan 2014, Lisbon 2015. I always wanted to go to EARIE, more than any other conference. Missed Munich 2016 and returned to OZ in 2017. I have not been around since but I always want to. Enjoy EARIE!
The last time I was at EARIE was Lisbon 2016. I always have a soft spot for EARIE. During my PhD, EARIE's acceptance gave me incredible support and joy after getting rejected by rising star sessions of IIOC. Was huge for one who didn't understand conference rejections.
I flew all the way from Sydney to Stockholm. It was my first time in Europe. Stockholm in August was incredible. It was my first overseas presentation. I got many useful feedback. I felt strongly to work on IO in Europe. I joined Mannheim a year later.
Very excited to learn what extra economists have learnt about cloud in the last 13 years besides the number of main players increase from 1 to 3 and many?
