On 8 May 1945, Europe was celebrating the defeat of Nazi Germany and the end of the war in Europe.

In French-ruled Algeria, however, Algerians were taking to the streets in Sétif, Guelma and Kherrata, demanding freedom and expressing support for Algerian independence.

The response from the French colonial authorities was swift and brutal.

French forces opened fire, and the repression that followed included killings, arrests, executions and collective punishment.

European settler militias were recruited to help in the violence.

Rape of women and children was institutionalized.

Over 50,000 Algerians were killed.

The hypocrisy of that moment is difficult to ignore.

Europe was celebrating liberation from fascism while millions of Africans remained under European colonial rule.

France was presenting itself as a defender of freedom and civilization, yet in Algeria, an African people demanding political rights and self-determination were met with bullets and repression.

And this was not an isolated episode. It became part of the long history of violence that ultimately culminated in Algeria's brutal war of independence against French colonial rule.

The Sétif, Guelma and Kherrata massacres remain a powerful reminder that the end of World War II did not mean the end of colonial oppression.

For Europeans, 8 May 1945 represented liberation.

For many Algerians, it became a day of mourning.

Never forget Sétif. Never forget Guelma. Never forget Kherrata.

Never forget the millions of Africans who were still fighting for the freedom Europe claimed to have won. 🇩🇿✊🏿
