In the third time in as many years, Gov. Newsom is proposing to manipulate voter-approved Proposition 98. The proposal would withhold $5.6 billion from schools for 2025–26, efffectively lowering funding by nearly $1,000 per student.
When the Governor proposed withholding $8.8 billion in 2024, CSBA filed a lawsuit to protect school funding. In January, CSBA President Dr. Debra Schade (@schade4kids ) said, "CSBA urges the administration and Legislature to reconsider this approach, honor the Prop 98 Guarantee and prioritize elevating school funding to the level of the top 10 states — a perch California occupied when its K-12 school system was regarded as one of the nation’s best.”
The @WeAreCTA agrees, with CTA President David B. Goldberg saying, "Prop 98 isn’t a piggy bank you get to borrow from. It’s the law that entitles our students to the funding they need to learn.” https://t.co/iXYb6GDrL6
