🚨 Roy Keane on Gakpo not being awarded a penalty against Ipswich:

🗣️ Keane: “I must’ve missed something during the week because I was told last weekend that this was a penalty.

When Alisson made contact with Williams after he’d already taken his shot, I said it wasn’t a penalty. The argument afterwards was, ‘It doesn’t matter that the ball is gone. There’s still contact.’

Fine. I disagreed with it, but at least that’s the explanation.

Now look at Gakpo. He releases the pass, though it gets intercepted, but the defender comes across and takes him out. The attacking move is already gone. Then there’s contact.

So where’s the penalty?

Whether Gakpo’s pass was intercepted doesn’t matter. Williams had already wasted his chance last week as well. If contact after the attacking action was enough to punish Alisson, why isn’t it enough here?

That’s what drives players and managers mad. I don’t even need them to agree with me anymore. Just agree with themselves.

Last week I said Williams had already completed what he wanted to do and people told me I was wrong.

Okay. Then give Liverpool the penalty today.

🗣️ Wenger: “This is one of those situations where the manager will be very frustrated because Liverpool had already made their decision. Three players were ready to come on. The ball went out several times, but because there was a problem with the board, the substitutions could not happen.

The game continues. Forest attack, Alisson comes out and there is a penalty.

Everybody will analyse Alisson now. Should he come out? Is the contact enough? But from a coaching perspective, you also look at what was supposed to happen before the attack. Liverpool were trying to put three different players on the pitch.

Maybe Forest still create the chance after the substitutions. We cannot know. But three substitutions can change the structure of a team completely, and Liverpool had already asked to make those changes.

That is why the manager will be angry. He did his job. He identified what needed changing and had the players ready. The only thing he did not prepare for was having to wait for the substitution board.”
