Today, the Kulamba Ceremony unfolds in all its grandeur, bringing together the Chewa people from Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique. Usually celebrated on the last Saturday of August, this year’s ceremony is happening a week earlier, filling the air in Katete with the vibrant pulse of drums, the energy of dance, and the deep echoes of tradition.
The Kulamba Ceremony is a powerful expression of cultural unity and ancestral veneration. At its heart is the Gule Wamkulu, a sacred and intricate dance performed by the Nyau dancers. These dancers, clad in elaborate masks and costumes, embody spirits from the ancestral world, guiding the living and reminding them of the ancient moral codes that govern society. The masks are not mere adornments but symbols steeped in meaning.
The ceremony is a kaleidoscope of colors and sounds. The dance performances are not just entertainment; they are a form of storytelling, passing down history, lessons, and warnings from generation to generation. As the dancers move, the community is reminded of the importance of virtues like loyalty, honesty, and respect for the natural and spiritual world.
The Kulamba Ceremony serves as a tribute to the paramount chief of the Chewa people, Kalonga Gawa Undi, where scores of chiefs come to pay homage. This gathering is not just about reverence; it’s a time for the community to come together, share in their heritage, and celebrate the survival and strength of their culture in a rapidly changing world.

Nyau, meaning mask or initiation is a secret society of the Chewa of Central and Southern Africa. The Nyau dancer Kasinja, wears a wooden mask decorated with chicken feathers and is always the first to appear at social events to open the arena for the rest of the Nyau to perform.
