Ichafu (also spelled ịchafụ, ichafo, or ichaf) is the traditional Igbo word for a woman’s headtie/headwrap. Igbo women have used headcloths and headwraps as part of their attire for a long time—well before the colonial era.
History and origins
Headwrapping is regarded as an indigenous Igbo practice. European accounts from as early as 1841 (e.g., William Allen’s description of Igbo women, including wives of a local leader) already note women wearing headcloths. By the early 20th century, dictionaries and ethnographic records use forms like “ichafo” or “ichafu” for head-dress or head covering.

Before the term ichafu became widespread, dialectal names were common, such as ụnarị / ụnalị / ụlarị (or similar variants) and, in places like Ngwa or Mbaise, akịsị / akịshị. Some linguistic analyses treat ichafu as a native compound roughly meaning “to gather and wrap” (from roots related to gathering/bunching and wrapping/binding the head). Others note possible influence from English “scarf” or French terms for cloth/headgear through trade contact. Either way, the practice of tying cloth on the head predates the modern dominant
