Microsoft is testing a new Disc-to-Digital feature for Xbox that lets players convert eligible physical Xbox games into digital licenses tied to their Microsoft account.

The feature is currently being tested internally by Xbox employees.

Here’s how it reportedly works:

>Insert a compatible Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc into your console.

>Install and launch the game while signed into your Microsoft account.

>Microsoft grants a digital entitlement linked to both your account and that specific disc.

>Once converted, you can play the digital version without the disc inserted.

>If the game supports Xbox Cloud Gaming, you can stream it with an eligible Game Pass subscription. If it’s an Xbox Play Anywhere title, you also gain access on Windows PCs and supported handhelds.

>The digital license remains tied to ownership of the physical disc.

If you lend or sell the disc, the digital entitlement reportedly transfers with it, preventing people from converting a game and then selling the disc while keeping a permanent digital copy.

Microsoft is testing a new "disc-to-digital" feature for Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs, which allows users to convert physical games into digital copies.

This feature does not support Xbox 360 or original Xbox discs.

Digital entitlements will mirror purchases made in the Microsoft Store, enabling streaming via Xbox Cloud Gaming for Game Pass subscribers and compatibility with Xbox Play Anywhere titles for PC access.

The feature will also support bundled discs and multi-disc titles, but some Xbox One discs may not be compatible depending on how and when the disc was manufactured, and it may not have the features we need for this program.
