Explaining what Chinese people are talking about—consumer trends, tech, work, and everyday life in China. Posts in English.

China’s dependency on oil is dropping fast

[Nicolas Fulghum @nicolasfulghum]

In September, China's combustion vehicle (ICE) sales dropped to just a third of the market for the first time

Battery electric vehicles are getting close to half of the market (47.3%), while Plug-ins added another 19.7%.

Only 5 years from >90% to 33% ICE.

One stat I had to read twice:

Companies in Shenzhen now account for about 90% of the global consumer 3D-printer market.

The real win isn’t just cheaper hardware, but also made 3D printing boringly easy: press print and then get a reliable result.

That’s how niche tech becomes a consumer product.

Imagine marrying someone who has exactly the same first AND last name as you.

That's what happened to a couple in China. Both are named Zhu Xiaocong, with the same Chinese characters.

Their relatives thought the wedding invitation had a printing error.

What are the odds?

[China Signals @ChinaSignalsHQ]

For young people in China, the burden of the bride price that the groom is expected to pay the bride's family is excessively heavy. Many men are forced to give up long-standing relationships simply because they cannot afford it.

This's not good to China's declining birth rate.

Do men in your country also have to pay a high bride price to the woman's family when getting married?

Not every factory needs a shiny new robot. Some might be more interested in software that helps them make smaller batches without losing their minds.

That's the argument coming from Black Lake, a Chinese factory-software company. Its CEO says some manufacturers are moving straight toward AI agents instead of spending years building out every layer of traditional digital systems first.

Imagine you're a small brand.

You want 300 customized items, not 30,000 identical ones. The factory has to handle changing specifications, suppliers, schedules and production updates. Even when the machines can make your product, coordinating everything can be the headache.

Black Lake argues that AI agents can help factories become more agile across design and production.

Of course, that's a vendor's claim, not proof that every factory is doing this successfully.

But I'd be more impressed by AI that makes manufacturing genuinely flexible than by another flashy demo.

Can it help smaller customers get exactly what they need, reliably and at a reasonable price?

A dance tutorial from the 1990s has somehow become a Chinese internet meme in 2026.

People are copying moves called the “flash step” and “black bear shaking fur.” Someone even turned the dancers into keychains.

The catch? Some imitators have ended up injured. Apparently the moves are harder than they look.

How do you make people watch a livestream about disinfectant?

Apparently, you build an entire content operation around it.

Reckitt, the British company behind Dettol and Lysol, has built 18 livestreaming studios in Shanghai to sell everyday household products to Chinese consumers.

Not luxury handbags. Not the latest smartphones.

Cleaning sprays. Hygiene products. The stuff people normally grab off a supermarket shelf without thinking twice.

Its teams create short videos, livestreams and even little comedy sketches to make those products entertaining.

And the business is working. Reckitt has reported 12 consecutive quarters of double-digit growth in China.

What caught my attention isn't just the sales growth.

It's how differently the company thinks about selling.

In China, the shopping experience itself has become content. People discover a product while watching something entertaining, ask questions in real time, and buy without leaving the app.

Imagine your local supermarket having to compete with that.

Would you actually watch a livestream about cleaning products?

Five mountains. Five provinces. Five days.

A woman in China climbed all five of the country's famous Great Mountains in a single trip.

And I thought my holiday itinerary was ambitious.

Some people really don't know how to take a relaxing vacation.

Imagine getting a call asking you to sing in front of 30,000 people. Tonight. No rehearsal.

That actually happened to a local singer in China.

Hong Kong star Hacken Lee was delayed by bad weather, so Hou Lang stepped in and kept the crowd entertained for nearly two hours.

No teleprompter. No proper preparation. Just songs he knew and an audience willing to sing along.

He went from being a relatively unknown performer to a viral sensation.

Sometimes your biggest break arrives with absolutely no warning.

Tesla relys on cost-effective components from China.

It is a globally recognized fact that China possesses the world's largest manufacturing base, enabling rapid prototyping, testing, and product refinement for any product.

Over the past few decades, cities such as Shenzhen, Dongguan, and Suzhou have developed vast, interconnected networks of electronic component suppliers—producing motion controllers, sensors, and inertial measurement units—thereby securing a significant competitive advantage in the robotics sector.

According to Morgan Stanley estimates, the material cost for manufacturing Tesla’s Optimus Gen2 humanoid robot using components from Chinese suppliers is approximately $46,000; however, if a non-Chinese supply chain were used instead, the cost would nearly triple, soaring to $132,000.

[Guillermo Flor @guilleflorvs]

Last year Tesla had humanoid robots with no arms.

The reason: China blocked exports of the magnets used in electric motors. Elon Musk says it set Optimus back 2 to 3 months.

His joke: a farewell to arms. He was trying to be an arms dealer and not succeeding.

His conclusion:

1. Tesla has to be able to make its robots in the US even if China cuts it off.
2. That means making every part domestically.
3. The same goes for any future supply chain interruption.

Imagine buying 196 parking spaces in one go.

That's what a woman in Changsha, China, reportedly did. She paid around ¥14 million for spaces in a residential complex when the development was still struggling to attract buyers. That was about 40% of the project's parking inventory.

Later, she reportedly began selling the spaces at a markup.

The neighbors were furious. They argued that parking is something residents need, not a resource one person should be able to corner. The dispute ended up in court.

I can see both sides. She put real money at risk when nobody else wanted the spaces. But if you lived there and had to buy your parking spot from the same person who owned nearly 200 of them, you'd probably have questions too.

Where's the line between a smart investment and taking advantage of a community's needs?

[China Signals @ChinaSignalsHQ]

Would you buy a pet that never needs walking, feeding or a vet?

Some young adults in China are choosing fluffy AI companions instead.

One Shanghai office worker told China Daily she bought a robotic pet because she works late and her landlord won't allow animals. She even takes it on work trips.

I get the convenience. But here's what interests me: people aren't necessarily shopping for smarter hardware. They're shopping for something that greets them when they get home.

Comforting, or a little sad?

A baby born just before Lunar New Year can be “2 years old” a few days later.

In China's traditional *xu sui* system, you're counted as 1 at birth and gain another year at the new year.

Birthday math can get weird.

[China Signals @ChinaSignalsHQ]

A Chinese mother started gaming to understand why her son was so hooked.

Six years later, she's 60, streams twice a day, and has over 500,000 followers.

The funniest part?

Her son now has to stop HER from playing too late.

Talk about a role reversal.

A blind passenger in Chengdu asked his ride-hailing driver if he'd hesitated to pick him up.

He was also self-conscious about how his eyes looked.

The driver reassured him—and later offered free rides to his hometown, over 200 km away.

That's a level of kindness you don't forget.
