Minna: Death of over 30 Youth In Detention Must Be Investigated

The Nigerian authorities must immediately set up an independent investigation of today’s death of over 30 youth — including minors — in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna Niger state. The victims were arrested on September 15 and 16, 2026 at mining sites located at M.I. Wushishi/Lukoto axis of Minna. This loss of lives cannot go unanswered.

Government must promptly, thoroughly, independently, impartially, transparently, and effectively, investigate how detention for one to two days descended into a disaster that killed minors. Those who are found to be behind this tragedy must not merely receive internal or administrative sanctions. They must face the full scale of justice.

The circumstances of the arrests of the victims and the condition in which they were detained must be established transparently. Victims and their families must be provided with access to justice and effective remedies.

The authorities must ensure justice for the victims of this horrific yet preventable incident which cost so many people, many believed to be children, their lives.

Debunking the Phantom Debts and Ecological Loan Fallacy

My attention has been drawn to trending claims by the Anambra State Government that my administration left behind inherited debts, including a ₦2 billion ecological loan, contractor liabilities, and unpaid salaries, gratuities, and pensions. This is completely false.

We systematically liquidated historical gratuities and arrears dating back several years, amounting to over ₦35 billion. At the point of handover, the state owed nothing in salaries, gratuities, or pensions, nor did we owe anything to any contractor for projects duly executed and certified.

The ₦2 billion ecological fund in question was released barely three months before the end of my tenure for the Oko/Umuchiana erosion crisis. Despite pressure to spend the money, I refused, insisting that it should be left for my successor because government is a continuum and the funds were tied to a specific project.

The money was therefore left 100 per cent intact in First Bank, in Account No. 2018779464, with a balance of over ₦2.13 billion.

It is important to stress that funds tied to specific projects or set aside for particular purposes were not even included in the over ₦75 billion in savings we left behind.

If anybody can establish anything to the contrary, I will stop campaigning. -PO

A friend travelled to Abia from abroad; he had not been back there for decades. He sent me videos. He was amazed.

He was not amazed at the roads that were fixed, the cleanliness of the public roads, or even the airport-style bus terminal; he was amazed it took just 36 months. He said he would casually ask everyone- market women, hotel staff, bus drivers- and they all said the same thing: they were happy with their Governor.

He told me that around 10 pm, he drove to see a friend; they went out to sit and had a beer. It was completely peaceful and safe.

He said the only "negative" was that land prices in Aba have skyrocketed; he wanted to buy land in Umuahia and Aba, but he could not afford it.

We should not celebrate roads built with FAAC, but Abia shows that a leader who has a plan can do a lot in a short time if the people see you are working.

This governance thing is not hard; you are given FAAC to spend, so why not spend it well? What is hard is picking one road, 5 schools, 2 hospitals a month and doing them with FAAC? In 3 years, you would have fixed 36 major roads, 180 schools, and 72 hospitals.

In the last three years alone, over 15 million Nigerians have turned 18—enough to decide who becomes President, Governor, Senator, Member of the House, or Local Government Chairman. Indeed, enough to shape the nation’s future.

I know many of you are sceptical about politics and political parties. I understand why, but scepticism must not become surrender.

You do not need to belong to any party or wait for anyone to organise you. Organise yourselves in your streets, campuses, communities, workplaces, churches, mosques, and social groups. Mobilise, debate, demand accountability, and take part in choosing those you wish to entrust with leadership.
