It’s sad: America did this to them. This is the moral deformation caused by our retirement state: Retired homeowners see no reason to care about the future.

Social Security and Medicare replace family obligations and individual self-restraint. They force other people’s children and grandchildren to fund their generous benefits, so they have little need for support from their own. So why spend time with them? And government displaces their own private investment and savings, and therefore substitutes for personal virtue and character.

Retired homeowners have got stable income from government already, and special senior tax breaks, so what need have they for new houses, schools, jobs or growth?

My dad grew up in one of the most rural parts of NC. Thanks to the Duke Talent Identification Program, which ran a talent search across the rural South to find and uplift smart American kids, he was thrown an intellectual life preserver. He then double majored in math and CS, and went on to get his finance PhD.

That program doesn’t exist anymore.

Now, when a top university wants stem talent, they import it en masse from Asia, and fasttrack those immigrants to high paying US jobs. How many brilliant rural kids are out there now (in the “flyover states” @agupta smeared) waiting for a life preserver that never comes? Neglecting American STEM talent was one of our most egregious errors.

The surge was by design. The Biden administration made it official policy that if you claimed asylum at the southern border, you would be paroled or released into the United States, put on a path to a work permit, and handed a Notice to Appear for an immigration court date years down the road. The goal was to flood the system and lock in amnesty before asylum claims could be denied or aliens could be deported. All the migrants had to do was say the word “asylum,” and Border Patrol was forced to process them into the country.

This isn’t about a Twitch streamer, regardless of how you’d like to insult the intelligence of the American electorate.

This is about how, out of the hundreds of millions of people we have in our country, you have a strong association with someone who has said emphatically that we deserved 9/11.

If you actually cared about Americans, as you mean to imply by your rhetoric concerning affordability, you would have nothing to do with anybody who says that. Obviously.

Curiously, however, you do. And you refuse to explicitly denounce him and his rhetoric.

Todd Beamer, the American hero who famously led the “let’s roll” charge against the Flight 93 hijackers, was from Michigan. Knowing he couldn’t save his own life that day, he made the heroic decision to at least save hundreds more.

As a Michigan voter, I’d like to know — did Todd Beamer deserve to die? And what do you think of people like Hasan Piker who answer “yes” to that?

Bobby is right that “abundance” too often lacks a moral structure. I would add two things:
1. A dynamic economy requires higher social trust than we now have. And also self-restraint and local authority.
2. We should build around the American Dream as a concrete, normative ideal. Owning a home in a safe neighborhood with good schools, cars, and affordable cars, electricity, groceries, etc. Marriage, intact families, work, etc. This life is better than the alternatives and more honorable and we shouldn’t shy away from saying so. And finally, it doesn’t and cannot happen without economic growth and technological innovation.
