She highlighted that artisans, with their knowledge, dedication and hard work, have enabled Indian handicraft products to establish a distinct identity across the world. Necessity is the mother of invention, and the same holds true for the Vaghari tribe of Gujarat.

These once nomadic tribes were not allowed in temples, which resulted in the creation of Mother Goddess paintings serving as portable shrines. Sanjay Chitara, an artist hailing from this community, is a testament to their creative legacy.

Inspired by the Kalamkari style of painting, pieces of cotton cloth are painted on using a stick made from a date plant, with natural pigments. The process, which is lengthy, involves the entire family.

Sanjay intervenes in this traditional process by adding new colours to the palette, greater finesse and experimenting with contemporary themes.

In ’10 Mother Goddesses’, the artist creates intricate renditions of flora and fauna surrounding the motifs of ten goddesses: Surmayi Mata, Dasa Mata, Bahuchar Mata, Jogni Mata, Ambe Mata, Meldi Mata, Shakti Mata, Sagar Mata, Aluksa Mata and Durga Mata.
