The new finance deal of $300 billion agreed at COP29 dwarfs in comparison to the trillions of dollars needed to help developing and vulnerable countries respond effectively to climate change. 1/
Most of this fund will likely be sourced from private financing rather than directly from States, complicating the deal further. Yet the new finance deal should not be dismissed away lightly. 2/
That negotiating parties could arrive at a compromise despite opposing views at COP29 speaks to the value of multilateralism. The next steps should include ensuring that the target is achieved in time (that is, by 2035). 3/
