We thank God in all situations. A gutting way to end the tournament. The support & togetherness we’ve felt has been special. Sorry we couldn’t take it all the way, we fought and gave it our all. We’ll build on this. Not finished yet though, we still have something to push for. 💚
Africa’s digital leap for environmental action is already underway.
At today’s #AMCEN20 High-Level Ministerial Dialogue, ministers and global experts came together to explore one of Africa’s most defining opportunities: harnessing AI, sustainable digital tools, and early warning systems to transform how the continent monitors, protects, and restores its environment.
Under the theme: "Sustainable Digital Technologies, AI, and Early Warning Systems for Environmental Sustainability", the dialogue surfaced bold ideas, and immediate next steps.
What emerged:
- AI for climate justice: Artificial Intelligence isn’t just a tech buzzword—it’s now a critical tool to reduce environmental harm, enhance risk assessment, and protect the most vulnerable through real-time responses. From flood prediction to biodiversity monitoring, AI is reshaping environmental governance.
- Data must serve development: There was strong consensus on investing in the digitization of African data, addressing AI model bias, and building infrastructure that supports ethical, inclusive, and locally relevant solutions.
- Early warning, real results: From fisheries to farming, early warning systems powered by satellite data are already delivering life-saving impact. Calls to scale these systems across Africa—and link them to local response, were unanimous.
- Digital public goods and governance: Global partnerships are now unlocking platforms like the UN Environment Programme World Environment Situation Room and new science-policy panels on pollution and chemicals. But they must remain accessible, African-owned, and actionable.
- A continental digital transformation agenda: Delegates shared national strategies, from climate-smart agriculture to mobile money for ecosystem restoration, and emphasized the need for policy coherence, capacity building, and regional frameworks to ensure no one is left behind.
Key action points:
→ Establishing ethical codes of conduct for AI aligned with UN/UNESCO principles
→ Investing in STEM education, digital skills, and green digital infrastructure
→ Launching a pan-African AI strategy for biodiversity and climate monitoring
→ Advancing a continental framework for green tech innovation and technology transfer
→ Leveraging early warning systems as an entry point for scaling AI adoption in resilience planning
→ Integrating environmental data into climate budgets and national planning processes
This wasn’t just a conversation about technology. It was a commitment to ensure Africa leads the global digital sustainability transition—with speed, equity, and purpose.

As we promised, here are 4 simple and practical ways to reduce plastic pollution using the 4Rs:
1. REDUCE Say no to single-use plastics like straws, plastic bags, and disposable cutlery. Carry your own reusable water bottle, shopping bag, or food container to cut down on waste.
