Happy Black History Month! For 100 years, each February we’ve celebrated the Black folks who've shaped our nation and fought for our freedoms. As we reflect on how far we've come, we can't lose sight of the work that remains. The dreams of our ancestors depend on all of us carrying on their work and refusing to be deterred. That's what Black history is all about: the enduring hope, joy, resilience and resistance—truths that resonate as powerfully today as ever before.
The results, from the National Assessment of Educational Progress, long regarded as the nation’s most reliable, gold-standard exam, showed that about a third of the 12th-graders who were tested last year did not have basic reading skills. https://t.co/2JiiTJBbWf

🚨 Today’s @NAEP_NCES release is a warning siren. Every 8th grade subject math, reading, science, U.S. history & civics shows real declines since 2019.
The steepest drops? Our lowest-performing students. Gaps are now wider than at any point in recent memory.
12th grade math:
⚠️ Lowest average score ever
⚠️ Just 22% at/above Proficient
⚠️ 45% below Basic—struggling with single-step % in real-world problems
12th grade reading:
⚠️ Lowest scores ever
⚠️ Only 35% at/above Proficient
⚠️ 32% below Basic—unable to reliably draw conclusions from text
Absenteeism is rising too.
This isn’t just about a test. It’s about a generation leaving school less prepared for a future defined by rapid innovation & complexity.
We face a 3-part crisis: leadership, workforce, and learning. And a Sputnik-type moment: #AI will define the future of work, society, and discovery. Will America act with urgency?
We need bold leadership, clear goals, aligned resources so every student can thrive.
These results don’t have to define our future. With will & leadership, we can change the trajectory. We’ve done it before. We can do it again.

“Raise your hand if you think you've stayed in a job longer than you needed to because you didn't feel like you were ready…by the time we actually raise our hands, we are
so far past ready.”

Just 1 more week until #WLESummit kicks off in Charlotte. Our Advisory Board members play a key role in shaping and advancing our curriculum, our advocacy and research, and our content for the annual Summit.
A new @WomenLeadingEd survey finds that 60% of women leaders think about quitting due to stress, and of those, three quarters have those thoughts daily, weekly or monthly. @lrj417 reports https://t.co/YR3p64a4FU
From women in the classroom making up three-quarters of our educator workforce, to women advocating for their children’s education, to women shaping policy at the Department, we celebrate all the women working every day to positively shape education.

Today @WeAreILO released our first-of-its-kind #AI framework for state & district leaders–providing them with the tools and research-basis to thoughtfully embrace this game-changing technology.
Here’s a🧵on how we developed it and our next steps:

Coaching trees have been used in professional sports for many years and their impact has been well documented.
Gregg Popovich is a shining example. In 2023, 6 of the 29 @NBA head coaches and another @WNBA coach had at some point in their careers worked directly under Popovich.
An additional five current-serving head head coaches could trace their line of coaching back to the Hall of Famer. This, in addition to a number of former coaches, past and present assistant coaches and even multiple team general managers, has made Popovich not only one of the most successful coaches, but one of the most prolific coach-of-coaches. Popovich hasn’t just won games, he has transformed the very game and industry of basketball through his coaching tree.
One of Popovich’s assistants also became the first woman to ever serve as a head coach in an @NBA game.
This is the power of coaching trees and depth charts. Coach Popovich over his many decades of coaching, has identified the potential of others in the field early in their careers, facilitated their promotion, and most importantly understood their potential and taken the steps to nurture it.

Small thinking has never led to great things. When planning the future, we must think with the big picture in mind. If we could conceive the most competitive award, it would be “the keeper of the small picture”. That cannot be who we are. We must think big, dream big, & act big.
