Why Zac Taylor Should Be Fired A Clear Football Based Evaluation

1. Chronic Slow Starts and Predictability on Offense

Despite having elite offensive talent for multiple seasons (Burrow, Chase, Higgins, Mixon previously), the Bengals consistently rank among the worst teams in first-quarter scoring, early-game efficiency, and scripted drives.
A head coach with an offensive background should excel in these areas, yet the Bengals often look unprepared until halftime adjustments kick in. That points directly to coaching, planning, and play design issues.

2. Scheme Doesn’t Elevate Talent

The best coaches take average players and make them look good. With Zac Taylor, it’s often the opposite:
•Players win despite the scheme, not because of it.
•Route concepts often lack creativity.
•The run game rarely develops an identity.

When you have a franchise QB and elite receivers, the scheme should consistently produce explosive, efficient offense. Too often, it doesn’t.

Wasting a superstar QB’s prime is one of the fastest ways a coach loses his job.

5. No Clear Year to Year Progress

After the Super Bowl run, the team’s overall direction has plateaued or regressed. The hallmark of a well-coached team is sustainable improvement, young players developing within the system, and a defined team identity.
Under Taylor, the Bengals often feel like they’re reinventing themselves every season instead of building something consistent.

6. Bengals Success Feels Personnel Driven, Not Coaching Driven

When fans and analysts talk about what makes Cincinnati dangerous, they talk about:
•Burrow
•Chase
•Higgins
•Lou Anarumo’s defense
•Playmakers stepping up

Zac Taylor rarely gets credited as the reason for success and that’s telling. A head coach should be the stabilizing force and strategic advantage, not the one fans question every Sunday.

7. Other Coaches Are Winning With Less

Around the league, coaches like Mike McDaniel, Kyle Shanahan, Kevin Stefanski, and even first-year HCs routinely show more creativity and adaptability on offense.
When your peers consistently get more out of less talent, it puts a spotlight on your shortcomings.

Bottom Line

Zac Taylor’s issues aren’t emotional they’re structural and strategic.
For a team built to win right now, he often feels like the limiting factor rather than the engine of success.

If the Bengals want to fully capitalize on Joe Burrow’s prime and maximize the roster they’ve built, moving on from Zac Taylor is a legitimate and justifiable conversation.

As the discussion over the bases-loaded play in the bottom of the ninth in Game 7 continues, one thing I haven’t seen pointed out: Blue Jays third-base coach Carlos Febles marked the exact spot where he wanted Isiah Kiner-Falefa to lead off.

There are so many elements to this one play. Should he have taken another step? He was told not to, a point reinforced by other players, who have rightly pointed out that the fear of getting doubled off prompts coaches to keep runners close to the bag. Should he have run through home? Maybe, but it’s damn near impossible, with the speed of the game, to know where the throw is taking the catcher, and sliding is the standard practice.

Regardless, it’s illustrative of how many decisions go into a single play — and illustrates the nuances of the game that so often go unseen.

The fact of the matter is if he was fired today, he would never be a head coach in the NFL again.

He just ran the ball while losing with under a minute to go in a game to the worst team in the league.

This is a broken franchise.
