More than 100 of Kansas' most distinguished teachers/educators have signed onto a letter urging the Kansas legislature to support public schools and reject a handful of school choice/"voucher" bills #ksed#ksleg
Chair ends hearing that stripped public $ from public schools, sends $ to private schools, and ties #SPED funding increase to the whole mess with “great work!” Exactly who are they working for? #ksleg#ksed
"This weekend is the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. I remain committed to defending women’s rights to their own bodies, and I promise to honor those whose lives have been -- and will be -- harmed as a consequence of Roe’s repeal." #ksleg
Please take a moment to check out my statement regarding Republican attempts to remove the responsibility for Special Education Funding. A 🧵.
“When the Republicans talk about sound fiscal policy and putting Kansas Families first - it isn’t true...
This is important. Please reach out to your representatives and demand they fund special education and push back on the plan to change the law rather than do what the law says. Our kids need us to fight for education funding.
Kansas is at the highest graduation rate ever for all students, English language learners, free & reduced lunch, disabilities. Highest rates EVER. #ksleg#ksed#KASBConvention
@kyledcarlin It’s all designed to be confusing and hard to follow so people stop watching. Rep. Tarwater invited me to attend the interim meeting likely to see the horror on my face when he stated that special Ed is overfunded. Depraved. 🤮 I would have been there but had a sick kid at home.
@cindy4kansas I’m under 40, married since I was 21 to the same man and vote D because I want democracy to stand, for kids to have fully funded schools, and for women to have rights to bodily autonomy just like men do. I hope this is their plan b/c lolz. 😆
On every Veteran’s Day, I reflect on the discrepancy between honoring our veterans and our failure to provide for the mental and physical needs of many of them.
We should not only thank our men and women for their service, but fully support them once they’re back home. #ksleg
@srothschild1 My oldest son was in K the year Brownback cut funding. My kids have never known fully funded schools. We tried private school for one of our kids: $20K mistake. Private schools do not have to accommodate your kid - even if they are gifted. #fullyfundspecialed
@srothschild1 Tarwater is wrong. Gifted is so underfunded it is limited to kids in the 99th percentile in BV. And once a week gifted is not robust. Every KS kid deserves a quality education.
up an elective, which in BV could mean not being able to take Spanish since that is an elective, or participate in a music class, be it choir, band or orchestra. Gifted kids deserve for their needs to be met *without* having to forego elective opportunities their other peers get.
And the show goes on. 💙📚
This morning, I am tuning in to the #KSLeg Special Committee on Education on YouTube (Kansas Legislature channel). Education funding and excess costs of special education are on the agenda and this matters to so many in our community.
Kyle Karlin is doing God’s work with SPED in Western Kansas. However, as a mother of a gifted child who has a number of gifted student friends, once a week services for a K-5 kiddo is simply not “robust” as Kristy Williams claimed. And gifted at the middle school requires giving
