Joey Jones made the case for middle school uniforms during this recent discussion:

Middle school is often the toughest age for kids getting picked on over clothing and what’s considered “popular.” He noted that while high school has its own pressures, middle school can be especially brutal on that front.

His suggestion: every middle school should require a basic, affordable uniform. Nothing fancy or private-school formal — simple and casual options like school t-shirts (the same way softball leagues already print them). A few shirts for the week plus one nicer option for Mondays, along with limited shoe choices so no one stands out for having the wrong pair.

The point, as he framed it, is to reduce the social competition over clothes so kids can focus more on school.
