Suspect this is less about trying to force Burnham onto uncomfortable ground and more to do with trying desperately to catch up with Chris Philp and the Tories who have been running away with the issue this week.

I'm campaigning for more active, visible local community policing.

Tackling shoplifting and anti-social behaviour are top priorities, and I've been out on patrol with officers on #HaylingIsland and other areas to see their work first hand.

I will continue supporting our local police and feeding back residents' views.

@ArchiesPolitics Why would the PM do a 1 v 1 debate with a man who isn't even an MP?

They aren't competing in an election. If Farage wanted to challenge him he should have stayed in Parliament and said something there, and used that same platform now.

One of the improvements we’re making to our candidate selection process is screening for this tendency. Conservatives are weeding out the self-absorbed who come into politics because they couldn’t get into showbiz.

For these poseurs, being an MP is not about legislating to make people’s lives easier, safer and richer but a platform to campaign for their personal hobby-horses and other self-promoting activity.

They waste a lot of Parliament’s time with trivia, creating unwelcome delays and distraction from their colleagues’ work and focus on serious matters.
