In 2018, Pittsburgh father Ricky Smith was already working three jobs to support his family when his 14-year-old daughter, Nevaeha, found the dress she wanted for her eighth-grade formal.

At nearly $200, it just wasn’t something he could easily afford. But he knew how much it meant to her, so he picked up extra hours, saved the money and bought it without telling her.

Nevaeha thought her grandmother had picked out a dress for her. Instead, her dad surprised her with the exact one she had been wanting.

That hug tells the whole story.

She knew that dress was more than something pretty to wear to a dance. It was time, sacrifice and a father doing everything he could to make her happy.
