Alpine’s radical approach to the rear wing’s active aero movement has been raising eyebrows up and down the F1 paddock - here we compare it to Audi, Red Bull, McLaren and Mercedes 👀
Instead of the flap rotating up like most teams, Alpine’s rotates down.
Could Enstone be cooking up something special for 2026? 🤔
🚨 Active aero in F1 2026: how it really works
F1 will use a FIA-controlled active aero system to manage drag and car balance, with predefined scenarios applied per circuit rather than driver choice.
🟢 X-mode (straight-line mode)
Front and rear wings open to maximise straight-line efficiency.
🟡 Partial aero configuration
Only the front wing is active, adjusting balance without full drag reduction.
🔴 Z-mode (cornering mode)
Both wings fixed in standard configuration.
Activation zones will be circuit-specific and grip-dependent, and Race Direction will decide which mode is used at each event.
