Once a Warrior, Always a Warrior! This weekend's “second look” open house welcomed our community for another opportunity to tour the new home of Cherokee High School. Current and future students, alumni, and other community members enjoyed a self-guided tour. A walk-through for students to meet their teachers will be held later this month. Among the visitors was a member of the first class of Cherokee High School in 1956! Hazel Curtis Stokes shared memories of her favorite teacher, Dorothy Whitfield, and how she inspired her sewing career. She also showed her class picture and report cards to Principal Andy Hall, School Board Chair Janet Read Welch, and Superintendent of Schools Mary Elizabeth Davis. “I wanted to be here and be a part of this,” Ms. Stokes said of the historic moment, as she stood before the lobby’s inlaid message: Cherokee High School, Est. 1956. Built to house the school’s current enrollment with room for future growth, the new campus was made possible by the community’s support of our Education SPLOST. The Ken White Gymnasium played host Saturday to volleyball matches, as campus activity picks up leading to the first day of classes on Monday, Aug. 3. A Cherokee High School Class of 2026 graduate has earned a college-sponsored National Merit Scholarship! Congratulations to Andrew Lockwood, who plans to study finance at the University of Georgia, on winning a National Merit UGA Scholarship. Only 15,000 of the nation’s top graduating seniors – fewer than 1 percent -- are named National Merit Finalists becoming eligible for the 2,500 National Merit Scholarships financed by U.S. universities and colleges announced this week. Logan Harmon has earned the Britt Kearce Memorial Scholarship announced by Positive Athlete Georgia. As our post-planning days of the school year come to a close, teachers and staff at Cherokee High School have spent their final days before summer break doing more than packing up classrooms for the season. “Coach Sharpe let’s his work do the talking, and you’ll never hear him boasting about his successes. He coaches his players to prepare to win and to expect to win, and he helps them see where they can get better when they do not achieve their goals,” is how Cherokee High School’s principal describes CCSD’s 2026 Coach of the Year: Cherokee HS boys golf Head Coach Gerald Sharpe! A 23-year educator and coach who led the boys golf team to its first-ever State Championship last school year, Coach Sharpe was surprised with the honor this afternoon by Superintendent of Schools Mary Elizabeth Davis, district staff and Shottenkirk Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Canton General Manager Bill Harrell, who presented Coach Sharpe with the gift of a one-year lease of a new vehicle from the dealership. In addition to golf, Coach Sharpe also is the boys varsity assistant basketball coach and the school’s assistant athletic director and has served as assistant volleyball coach. Congratulations to Cherokee High School graduating senior John Grauso on earning the Judy Johnson Memorial Scholarship presented by the Cherokee County School District’s School Nutrition Association! John will study communication and media studies at Reinhardt University to pursue a career in the film industry. “Samuel exemplifies excellence through his dedication, skill development, and commitment to his future. As a welding Career Pathway completer, he has earned his OSHA-10 certification and is currently completing his American Welding Society vertical bevel certification, demonstrating a strong foundation in industry standards. Samuel has also represented our school in the SkillsUSA Metalworking Display competition. His hard work extends beyond the classroom, as he has enlisted in the U.S. Navy and is preparing to serve as a construction mechanic, shipping out this July. Samuel’s work ethic, initiative, and drive truly set a strong example for others,” teacher Daryl Jones shared. Today’s Senior of the Day is Samuel Garcia Jacinto from Cherokee High School, who has enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Grace Dai of Cherokee High School and Aiden Johnson of Creekview High School today were named among the 2,500 graduating seniors nationwide to earn this prestigious honor! Scholarship recipients are selected from the 15,000 finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Finalists represent the top 1% of all U.S. high school seniors. Congratulations to Grace, who will attend Stanford University, and Aiden, who will attend Georgia Tech to study computer science!
