@jcatalano2310 @Itchy535@2AvSagas The law clearly states that this revenue is to go to capital projects only. Unlike the MTA’s other general revenue sources, there is an actual law on the books that this revenue can’t be redirected. Agree that fare evasion is a big issue and they need to install new fare gates
@Itchy535@2AvSagas The purpose of congestion pricing is not to plug the lost revenue from fare evasion, and never was. Fare revenue goes towards operations , not capital projects.
A group of anti-congestion pricing advocates have found a loophole to avoid paying the tax.
They've discovered a network of underground tunnels where the DOT has no authority to install license plate readers.
Access to the tunnels start as just $2.75 per use or $127 a month.
Breaking News: Congestion pricing in New York City cleared its final federal hurdle, all but ensuring that the first program in the U.S. will begin next year, in an effort to reduce traffic and pollution in Manhattan and fund improvements to mass transit. https://t.co/CxtOxNy2Ks
@Matty_NJ@2AvSagas It' s also the difference in fares getting to the Airtrain Station.
PATH: $2.75
NJT: $8
And if PATH just goes directly to the terminals instead of having a separate AirTrain at all:
PATH: $2.75
NJT/AirTrain: $15.25
This would get people out of cars and using transit to EWR!
@nilocobau@2AvSagas Good point. And FWIW I think these projects do have merit, but would love to see more balance between Subway/heavy rail projects and commuter/regional projects. Time to start: SAS phase 2, Nostrand Ave extension, IBX, LaGuardia subway extension (🤞🏻)
@2AvSagas Approx. total count for commuter projects:
$11B - East Side Access
$2.5B - LIRR Mainline Expansion (3rd track and other improvements)
$431M - Ronkonkoma-Farmingdale double track
$1.35B - Penn Station Access ($1.85M minus Amtrak covering $500M)
$15.25B total
Am I missing any?
This is NOT simply a replacement tunnel. When the new tunnels open, original 2 will be renovated without losing current capacity, thus resulting in 4 tubes, doubling trans-Hudson rail capacity. Very important fact that all media seemingly fail to mention https://t.co/vx9lL7U6ej
@2AvSagas Speaking of the PA - am I missing something with this article? An “OMNY-like” fare payment system? I thought PATH is getting, literally, OMNY, which makes a lot of sense (and NJ Transit should too!)
