Based on a comparative case study of eight cities in Indonesia, South Africa and Switzerland, the study found that while some local governments show relatively advanced practices in specific areas, major gaps remain in financial planning and implementation capacity.

The key outcome: strategies alone are not enough. Reliable funding systems, stronger implementation capabilities and a holistic approach are essential to translate WASH plans into long-term infrastructure investment and improved service delivery.

But “temporary” toilets often last for years, with billions spent on solutions costing more than permanent infrastructure. Based on years of systematic evidence collection and community engagement, we’ve identified six practical recommendations that can transform how municipalities manage temporary sanitation.

We hosted a recycling and composting workshop for informal settlement residents in @CityofCT with our partner Thetha Community Organisation.

The training was designed to equip residents with practical knowledge and skills on composting and establishing backyard gardens. The initiative forms part of ongoing community-driven efforts to improve food security, environmental sustainability, and self-reliance within the settlement.
