Across the world, women and girls are facing the consequences of rising conflicts, democratic backsliding, economic pressures, shrinking civic space, and organized pushback against longstanding commitments on womenโs rights, which are converging to erode the foundations of gender equality. These fractures continue to shape institutions and public life, determining whose rights are upheld, whose voices are heard, and whose safety is protected.
Justice systems reflect these power dynamics. Discriminatory laws endure, impunity is tolerated, and the promise of equality under the law is unevenly realized. Across contexts, justice systems are among the first arenas where retreat from gender equality becomes visible. At the same time, justice systems are central to safeguard hard-won gains on gender equality, especially as one in four countries report backlash hampering implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action.
Access to justice is a transformative force in the lives of women and girls, to advance equality and non-discrimination, protect against violence and abuse, and strengthen trust in institutions. Justice systems that work for women girls help build more inclusive governance, support peace and social cohesion, and prevent future violations.
At a time when multilateral institutions are under strain and progress on gender equality is being hollowed out, this is an opportunity to champion commitments to global normative frameworks on womenโs rights, including the Beijing Platform for Action, reinforce accountability, and support concrete national action that ensures justice systems respond to the lived realities of women and girls.
The 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women follows a pivotal year for womenโs and girlsโ rights and marks the first full session of the Commission since the adoption of the resolution on its revitalization.
