This set of industrial profit data is significant. YTD August 2024 growth was less than 1pct YoY despite record trade surpluses and full swing in exports. It hints at deflation in producer prices. Add stagnant or declining real estate prices to this and you have a full blown deflation in progress. I expect PBOC to drop rates eventually to zero. Real rates however may continuing to be sticky. A closed capital account with FOREX controls makes matters worse. Any chance of a big readjustment in forex rates? It will have to wait post the November US presidential elections

@jnordvig My other takeaway is that new companies attract new college graduates and young adults. Given the dearth of new company formation, I would expect this trend to trickle down to higher youth unemployment rates.

I fully agree. Over here in Asia, all the young graduates refuse to get their hands dirty and work outdoors on sites. I have a friend who is the Chairman of a national Civil and Construction Professionals Association and he complains to me that there are no young college-bound students who want to do these two majors. Yet his society has tons of scholarship money to pay for these student majors. A total mismatch of expectations.
