🚨South Korea has entered full police-state territory today, and citizens are gripped by fear.

Today (July 31), the National Assembly passed a revision to the Criminal Procedure Act that completely abolishes prosecutors' authority to conduct supplementary investigations. With that safeguard gone, there is no longer an independent check on police investigations, making it far more difficult to expose cover-ups, misconduct, or investigative failures.

The Democratic Party pushed the bill through despite widespread public opposition. Polls showed that 55–61% of the public opposed the revision, while only 23–36% supported it. Opposition also came from within the Democratic Party itself and from police officials who warned of the consequences. Justice Minister Jung Sung-ho repeatedly offered his resignation, and Acting Prosecutor General Koo Ja-hyun resigned immediately after the bill passed. None of it mattered. The Democratic Party used its parliamentary majority to force the legislation through.

The Jang Yoon-gi case shows exactly why so many people opposed this change.

Jang, 23, fatally stabbed high school student Lee Chae-won, a complete stranger, in Gwangju and also attacked a male student. Police initially classified the case as a random attack. It was later revealed, however, that the murder was premeditated and driven by Jang's obsession with a specific woman.

The case became even more troubling because both Jang's father and uncle are active-duty police officers. Before investigators searched Jang's apartment, his father allegedly entered the residence and destroyed evidence. There were also allegations that officers involved in the investigation had leaked investigative details to him in advance. Police referred the case on a murder charge rather than murder with intent to rape, and the detective in charge was later arrested on suspicion of destroying key evidence.

It was not the police that uncovered these facts—it was the prosecution.

Through its supplementary investigation, the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office uncovered the alleged sexual motive behind the crime, exposed evidence destruction and suspected collusion within the police, and changed the charge to murder with intent to rape. The investigation then expanded beyond the suspect himself to examine the police chain of command.

If prosecutors had not stepped in, the alleged police cover-up in this case might never have come to light. Now that prosecutors' supplementary investigation authority has been abolished, who will uncover the next cover-up—and who will protect the victims when the police fail?
