This Week in Science...Sahara Desert dust plume makes the 5,000 mile journey across the Atlantic Ocean towards the U.S. Following the east/west Trade Winds, as much as 800 million tons of desert dust can make the journey. Look for some beautiful sunrises/sunsets as a result.
On this day in 1983, Space Shuttle Challenger was launched with astronaut and physicist Sally Ride aboard. Sally became America's first woman in space. Not only was Ride the first American female in space, but she was the youngest astronaut ever at 32 years old! Way to go Sally!!
On this date in 1844, Charles Goodyear patented vulcanized rubber. By adding sulfur to rubber, Goodyear was able to create a strong, moldable, waterproof compound that could be used for a wide array of products including tires and shoes.
On this day in 1979, the Gossamer Albatross, an airplane powered solely by human power, crossed the English Channel. Cyclist Bryan Allen used a peddling mechanism similar to a bike to pilot the aircraft. The 22 mile flight took 2 hrs and 49 mins with top speeds of 18 mph.
